Gilbert Regional Park, at Higley and Queen Creek roads, is three things this fall. On two dates in October it's a ticketed festival ground that closes to everyone without a ticket. Next door, its second phase is a construction site the Town expects to finish by Summer 2028. On every other day it keeps its regular hours of 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and its splash pad stays open until November 30.
If the park at 3005 E. Queen Creek Road is your regular park, the closure calendar matters more than the lineup. The first closure already happened. On Friday, October 9, the Town closed the entire park to anyone without a ticket for Sound Bites, which brought Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors and Phoenix band Wyves to the park from 4:30 to 10 p.m. The second closure is longer.
The Smoke Show closes the park for most of a weekend
The Town's park page gives the exact closure windows. The Smoke Show is listed as a one-day event, but its closure covers parts of three days.
| Date | What happens at the park | Hours affected |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, Oct. 9 | Sound Bites Music & Food Festival | Full park closure, 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Friday, Oct. 23 | Smoke Show closure begins | Park closes at noon |
| Saturday, Oct. 24 | The Smoke Show | Closed all day |
| Sunday, Oct. 25 | Park reopens | Closure ends at 5:30 a.m. |
| Through Nov. 30 | Splash pad season | 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. |
That gives morning walkers and the splash-pad crowd half a Friday and a full Saturday without the park. After that weekend, the splash pad has five more weekends before it closes for the season on Monday, November 30.
If you're going to the festival, here's what's on the other side of the fence. The Smoke Show is a country music and barbecue festival. Its 2026 lineup is Treaty Oak Revival, 49 Winchester, Corey Kent, Gannon Fremin & CCREV, and Eddie and the Getaway. The BBQ showcase brings in three pitmaster names: Little Miss BBQ from Phoenix, Heritage Barbecue from San Juan Capistrano and Salt Lick BBQ from Driftwood. A separate craft BBQ food court rounds out the food. General admission starts at $84 and VIP at $179, both with all-in pricing. Group cabanas start at $4,150.
Doors open at noon on the 24th. When this was written, the organizer still said parking details would come closer to the event. It encourages rideshare and walking, doesn't allow re-entry, and doesn't allow overnight parking or oversize vehicles in event parking. If you live within walking distance of Higley and Queen Creek, the walking suggestion applies to you.
The other half of the park was paused this summer
The festivals happen on the finished part of the park. The rest has been a work site since June 9, 2026. That's when the Gilbert Town Council approved the first Phase 2 construction contract, which started earthwork, grading and underground utilities.
Seven weeks later, the project's future was in doubt. On July 30, the Town posted a notice that it was pausing the Regional Park project while it reviewed its long-term financial priorities. It pointed to "financial pressures outside the Town's control, including recent state legislative changes that have reduced Gilbert's available revenue." The notice said several Council members wanted to reassess the project "given the scale of investment."
The pause lasted about seven weeks. The next contracts had been scheduled for an August vote, but Council postponed them so staff could finish additional financial and risk analysis. At the September 15 meeting, the town manager confirmed that funding for the contracts was in the current budget, and Council approved the second Phase 2 contract. The Town's Phase 2 project page now lists the work as 10% complete, with construction running from Summer 2026 to Summer 2028.
So the October festivals are running next to a project that has been funded, paused and approved again within one season. The September vote settled the next round of contracts, and the Town still says Phase 2 will open by Summer 2028.
What Phase 2 adds, and what the second contract covers
The September contract covers part of Phase 2: a six-field youth softball complex, a road connection to the new Ocotillo Road bridge, and new parking and lighting for the expanded park. The full Phase 2 list on the project page is longer:
- A six-field youth softball complex
- Additional playgrounds
- A bike park
- A skate park
- A dog park
- A disc golf course
- Roadway connections to the new Ocotillo Road bridge and to Higley Road
- New parking areas, lighting and maintenance facilities
The Town says the added Higley Road access will be built "with minimal disruption." The list also changes how the park will be used. Today it hosts a few big ticketed nights a year. Once the dog park, skate park and disc golf course open, more of its everyday use should come from regular visits, and the new parking and the Ocotillo Road connection are planned for that extra traffic.
Gilbert approved a second park project the same night. Council approved the second and final contract for Phase 2 of Desert Sky Park, which will add five multi-use fields, an inclusive playground and splash pad, pickleball and tennis courts, and a new entrance off Power Road. That section is expected to open in March 2028. That means two of the Town's larger parks are adding amenities on roughly the same timeline.
Where to go on Smoke Show weekend
If the Regional Park is closed for a weekend, the closest free outdoor alternative is Verde at Cooley Station, near Williams Field and Recker roads. Its free concerts play the Earnhardt San Tan Pavilion Stage, and events run on its lawn, The Green. The district has hosted events since 2023. Gilbert Sun News reported that more than 60 events were scheduled for the 2025–26 season.
The timing works out well. Verde Vibes, a free dueling-piano concert with Cactus Keys, is on Friday, October 23, the same day the Regional Park closes at noon ahead of The Smoke Show. The rest of the Verde events calendar through late November:
- Wednesday, Oct. 14: Mummies' Night Out
- Friday, Oct. 16: Moonlit Movies on The Green, free, with a Hocus Pocus theme
- Tuesday, Oct. 20: Play Date on The Green, a Halloween edition for young kids
- Friday, Oct. 30: Halloween on The Green, free, with a costume contest
- Friday, Nov. 6: Moonlit Movie, free
- Sunday, Nov. 8: Cars & Coffee
- Sunday, Nov. 15: Yoga on the Green
- Saturday, Nov. 21: The Gilbert Half Marathon, which starts and finishes at Verde
Unlike the festivals, these events happen around businesses that are open every day. Verde's dining directory lists Hash Kitchen, sneakybird and Stella's Ice Cream at 3919 E. Williams Field Road. Along Recker Road it lists BLU Seafood, FROSTAiLS, Origen, Brass Tap, Crust Simply Italian, The Blue Heron, Shatera Mediterranean Cuisine, Decadent Macaron, and Sip & Shop Boutique & Bar. The newest addition is A Sandwich Co., which opened at 2490 S. Recker Road in the space Cookie Co. used to occupy. For indoor plans, the district's entertainment directory lists Zero Latency and The Aviary.
Verde's owners, as reported by Gilbert Independent, have described the lawn as a canvas for events, meant to make the district an event destination. The Regional Park's festivals bring in people from across the Valley with ticketed headliners. Verde's lawn runs smaller free events almost every week.
The park's next big dates
After the Smoke Show, the park's calendar fills up again for the holidays. The Made with Love Market's Holiday Kick-Off is at Gilbert Regional Park on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the two days after Thanksgiving. Two days later, on November 30, the splash pad closes for the season. Its next season runs March 1 through November 30.
Then the park goes back to its winter routine, with the existing playgrounds, lake and courts open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. while construction continues on the Phase 2 side. If you live near Higley and Queen Creek, Phase 2 matters beyond the event calendar.
